liner notes
When I finished composing "We Can Fly" I thought it was a nice song, and after recording and arranging it I also thought it was definitely one of the best songs I've ever created. To this day, I still feel that way. It's a song that talks about feeling like an outcast, and how finding the kind of friend who understands how you feel is much better than constantly trying to fit in a place you don't belong. It's a pop song with delicate sounds that takes inspiration from tropical house, and the final section features some high notes and more powerful instruments to give it a strong ending. I wrote this song with my own personality in mind, and it's a song about embracing people who make you feel comfortable being yourself.
I remember this song was one of the last ones I sang at the last concert I held, so that performance felt quite bittersweet. In a way I felt good about performing new songs like this one, but it was also sad because I had dropped what made me stand out as a singer (the fact that I used to sing in Japanese), and I knew I wouldn't be invited to perform at Japanese culture events. That's why, when I finished that performance, some people in the audience told me "We Can Fly" was such an amazing song and they asked me if I had released it already (I hadn't yet), so that made me feel really proud of this song.
"Slow Down" is the b-side track, and it's a catchy electropop song that features influences and elements from EDM and dance-rock too. I used heavy autotune on this song for aesthetic purposes, as I thought it sounded better this way, and despite what the title might suggest, the lyrics talk about liking someone so much you don't want things to slow down anymore.
